1. The challenge: why unsustainability continues to worsen
We have been working on sustainability for quite some time. We produced multitudes of international agreements, national policies, and corporate sustainability programs. And yet the fundamental sustainability indicators — such as, greenhouse gas concentrations, biodiversity loss, water stress, and social inequality — continue to worsen.
The question that this situation would pose is not a tactical question but an intellectual one: If so much effort has been invested toward addressing the crisis of sustainability, why has so little been achieved? The answer is not a lack of will or funding or technology, but a lack of the right kind of thinking.
2. The intellectual gap: what went missing
The problem: Fragmented thinking
Current sustainability knowledge is largely produced and applied in disciplinary silos. Climate scientists study climate. Water engineers study water. Economists study growth. Sociologists study inequality. Each discourse produces rigorous knowledge within its own domain, with some interdisciplinary overlaps. But none — individually or collectively — produces a rigorous understanding of the ways these domains interact or the ways the problems that they study are connected, let alone the shape a coherent response to the entirety of a problem could look like. And the result? Organizations and governments take action in one area, which inadvertently worsens another. Policies address symptoms while the systemic causes get deepened. Reports document measured activities without necessarily demonstrating genuine progress.
The solution: Integrated thinking
The theory of integrated knowledge creation closes this intellectual gap. Instead of adding another discipline to the array of existing silos, it provides the integrated intellectual framework that bridges them, as it leads to the production of ‘knowledge of sustainability’ on the totalities of things/realities and not merely on some fragments. More importantly, this framework does not replace disciplinary expertise. It, instead, provides the intellectual architecture within which disciplinary expertise becomes strategically coherent and genuinely effective.
3. Existing approaches: why they do not suffice
The dominant mode of human intellectual inquiry since the 19th century has taken a reductionist form, i.e., breaking complex realities into their component parts and studying each part with depth. This approach has produced extraordinary advances: vaccines, precision engineering, digital technology, and much of the scientific infrastructure of modern civilization.
However, reductionism carries a structural limitation that has become, in the context of sustainability, a critical failure. When inquiry is organized around isolated parts, it systematically misses what exists between and across those parts — the connections, interdependencies, and systemic dynamics that define sustainability challenges. The problems of unsustainability do not live within any single discipline. They live in the spaces between and across disciplines.
As a consequence of this reductionist dominance, knowledge has also increasingly become compartmentalized. The disciplinary traditions — be it biology, economics, engineering, public health, or social sciences — operate within their own frameworks, methodologies, and vocabularies. The result is a profound intellectual mismatch. Humanity has accumulated extraordinary specialized knowledge — but this knowledge is fragmented, at times mutually incompatible, and inadequate against challenges that can only be understood and addressed as wholes. CIKI’s research identifies this fragmentation as one of the root intellectual causes of the crisis of sustainability.
4. We need integrated knowledge on top of knowledge
The concept
Integrated knowledge is knowledge produced on the totality of any defined thing/reality, arrived at through the systematic analysis of various aspects and elements of knowledge associated with that thing or reality, with respect to sustainability. Coined by Dr. A M M Maruf Hossain (2025) in The Intellectual Structure of Sustainability, it designates the form of comprehensive understanding required for sustainability challenges to be addressed with genuine intellectual rigor and practical efficacy.
Definition of integrated knowledge: “Knowledge that is produced on the totality of any defined thing/reality in attempting to study the same—i.e., the totality of the concerned thing/reality—through systematically analyzing various aspects and elements of knowledge, associated with that thing/reality, with respect to sustainability.” — Hossain (2025), The Intellectual Structure of Sustainability
The defining orientation of integrated knowledge is toward totality. The problems of unsustainability are such that they exist not in isolated fragments of things/realities, but in their totalities — in the complete, interconnected whole of what those things/realities are and how they function. Partial knowledge, however deep it may be within a given domain, cannot adequately account for the full scope of a sustainability challenge. Integrated knowledge precisely addresses this gap, as it represents knowledge constituted by the systematic incorporation of all relevant aspects and elements of knowledge, enabling:
accurate assessment of the sustainability status of any defined thing/reality,
identification of the actual root causes of sustainability problems, rather than surface symptoms,
the designing and implementation of approaches that address the whole of a system instead of isolated components,
informed decision-making, and evidence-based formation and implementation of sustainability policies,
integrative thinking that draws on and synthesizes knowledge across disciplines, sectors, and perspectives, and
reduction of wasted effort and resources that result from partial or misdirected undertakings.
5. The theory of integrated knowledge creation
How integrated knowledge is produced
The theory of integrated knowledge creation provides the intellectual foundation for the production of integrated knowledge. Developed and published by Dr. Hossain (2025) in The Intellectual Structure of Sustainability, it establishes — through empirical demonstration — both the capacity for and the process by which integrated knowledge could rigorously be produced.
What the theory articulates: “The capacity for the production of new knowledge on the totality of any defined thing/reality with respect to sustainability is empirically present within various aspects and elements of knowledge that are associated with that thing/reality, where the new knowledge could rigorously be synthesized through the appropriation of a bottom-up analysis of an empirical nature.” — Hossain (2025), The Intellectual Structure of Sustainability
This theory asserts reductive knowledge to present the raw material for the production of integrated knowledge on any defined problem of unsustainability, where this integrated knowledge exists in a latent form within the reductive body of knowledge associated with that challenge, and distributed across its various aspects and elements. Here, what is necessary is a rigorous process capable of analyzing that raw material from the bottom up in an empirically grounded manner in order to yield knowledge on the totality of the thing/reality where the given problem of unsustainability resides.
Dr. Hossain established this theory not merely as a philosophical assertion but through empirical demonstration. He constructed a novel intellectual process designed to serve as a wider, non-reductionist yet robust intellectual lens to enquire sustainability, and demonstrated its positive display of three essential traits:
Fundamental nature: Instead of representing a superficial methodological adjustment, it addresses the core epistemological identity of sustainability at a foundational level by offering a structurally original response to address the gap between the type of knowledge produced by conventional inquiry and the nature of scholarship the crisis of sustainability necessitates.
Empirical capacity: The process possesses the genuine ability to produce new, verifiable knowledge; it is not speculative but an evidence-based knowledge-creation instrument that yields substantively new understanding.
Functional-intellectual capability: The process operates as a reliable and replicable intellectual tool; it can be consistently applied across different sustainability contexts and subjects to produce integrated knowledge.
The positive display of all three traits confirms the scientific validity of the novel intellectual process and establishes the theory of integrated knowledge creation as an empirically grounded proposition — demonstrating that the production of integrated knowledge is not an aspirational claim but a verifiable intellectual reality.

Strategic aim #1: Advance sustainability knowledge and practice
CIKI seeks to deepen the intellectual and practical foundations of sustainability by producing rigorous research, publishing accessible literature, and translating complex sustainability issues into actionable frameworks that individuals, organizations, and communities can apply in everyday decision-making.

Strategic aim #2: Build organizational capacity for sustainability transformation
CIKI offers to equip organizations across the private, public, and civil-society sectors with the diagnostic tools, strategic roadmaps, and leadership capabilities required to embed sustainability as a core operational value rather than a compliance exercise or reputational afterthought.

▪ Provide executive coaching and leadership development programs that cultivate systems-level thinking and long-horizon decision-making.

CIKI affirms that the achievement of genuine sustainability is inseparable from human development in terms of the cognitive-creative flourishment of human society. It, therefore, actively works to expand access to education, training, and participatory opportunities that empower individuals — particularly those with neurodivergent dispositions — in realizing their full potential.

▪ Design and deliver training programs that address the unique strengths and challenges of neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism and ADHD.
▪ Support lifelong learning through accessible publications, public seminars, and community education initiatives that nurture curiosity and integrated thinking.
▪ Contribute to child and youth development by creating age-appropriate resources that introduce sustainability and human behavior concepts in an interesting manner.
▪ Collaborate with schools, disability service providers, and family networks to remove structural barriers to participation and achievement.
Strategic aim #4: Expand public participation and civic engagement
Sustainability is ultimately a collective project. CIKI believes that lasting change requires informed, engaged citizens who actively participate in shaping the systems they inhabit. CIKI, as such, actively seeks to work in building public understanding and facilitating civic dialogue around sustainability and human development priorities.

▪ Design and implement public awareness initiatives concerning sustainability with an aim to inspire commitment to meaningful action.
▪ Offer accessible public lectures and community workshops that translate expert knowledge for public benefit.

7. Theory of change
CIKI’s theory of change rests on a foundational conviction that, sustainable futures are built not through isolated technical fixes but through the deliberate cultivation of integrated thinking, reflective practice, and inclusive human development. Meaningful change occurs when individuals, organizations and communities develop the capacity to think differently about the systems they inhabit, followed by acting on that understanding with both rigor and compassion.
Phase #1 — From awareness to insight
The first phase of CIKI’s theory of change is epistemic: to surface the assumptions, mental models, and disciplinary blind spots that cause organizations and individuals to treat sustainability as an external constraint rather than an intrinsic orientation of thought. Through consulting, research, and educational engagement, CIKI aims to assist stakeholders develop genuine insight into the integrated nature of economic, social, and environmental systems.
Phase #2 — From insight to commitment
Insight alone is insufficient. CIKI’s programs are designed to bridge the knowing–doing gap by fostering commitment, i.e., the internalization of sustainability values as genuine motivators of behavior rather than perceiving them as mere external pressures.
Phase #3 — From commitment to action
Committed individuals and organizations require practical tools, strategic frameworks, and supportive networks to translate intention into action. CIKI aims to produce these scaffolds through its offering of consulting services, published frameworks, curriculum programs, and community engagement initiatives with an aim to equipping stakeholders to act effectively even within complex and uncertain environments.
Phase #4 — From action to systemic change
Individual and organizational actions accumulate into broader system-level transformations when they get aligned, sustained, and interconnected. 9. About the founder
Dr. A M M Maruf Hossain
CIKI was founded by Dr. A M M Maruf Hossain, a sustainability scholar, practitioner, and author. Dr. Hossain holds a PhD from RMIT University, where his doctoral work examined the creation of a fundamental intellectual process for the study of multifaceted bodies of knowledge/research in relation to sustainability. This work laid down the foundation for the development of the integrated intellectual framework that underpins CIKI’s activities.
